Ringtones have come a long way - and in a relatively short time - from having to compose your own tunes to having them processed and downloaded to you automatically, from basic monophonic Nokia ringtones to polyphonic ringtones and truetones. But what began as just a novelty, has now become an essential accessory for most mobile phone users.

For some, it's cool be able to choose to hear their favourite sounds when the phone rings. However, for others, a ringtone can be a way of personalising their phone - almost like a fashion statement. Some people may like to be associated with famous brand names, such as Versace, Levi or Armani, etc., by displaying labels on their clothing and, in almost the same way, a ringtone can be a personal statement about the type of music they enjoy, like heavy metal, chart music or jazz, etc. A ringtone featuring a favourite band or recording artist can also be important, like Eminem, Elvis Presley, Madonna, Black Eyed Peas, Darkness or the Beatles. Similarly, Star Trek, Harry Potter & Lord of the Rings fans can have a ringtone of their favourite film theme music. Football fans, like Manchester United supporters, can display their loyalty every time with their football ringtones such as "Glory, Glory - Man Utd Ringtones". There are many other football chants available as ringtones. Even the tunes from TV ads, such as Guinness, Heineken and Fiat, are also available as ringtones.

There is an interesting spin-off from ringtone music exposure, which is free, secondary advertising. To see listings of tracks by bands & recording artists, such as Eminem, Darkness or Busted promotes the records free of charge and hearing the music publicises them even further. Just having a brand name displayed in ringtone companies' ads gives instant free publicity, but each time a ringtone plays the music from a TV ad, such as Guinness, Heineken & Fiat, etc., the music reminds the listener of the ad's theme tune and, of course, the product.

The mobile phone manufacturers, such as Nokia, Alcatel, Motorola, Sagem, Samsung, Siemens, Sony Ericsson, Sharp & Panasonic, etc., along with the leading networks like 02 Vodafone, T-Mobile, Orange & Virgin, benefit in particular, as mobile phone manufacturers, like Nokia and the network operators are all heavily featured in the service providers' ringtone adverts. Additionally, apart from published ads, all of these companies can also benefit from free, international exposure on the internet.
